Determination of the current status of small animal husbandry in the hocalar district in Afyonkarahisar province

The study was conducted to determine the present situation of small ruminant enterprises of Afyonkarahisar province, Hocalar district. Research data were collected from 105 enterprises at 16 villages and town by face to face questionnaires. The questionnaire contained main sections such as demographic data about the enterprise; the enterprise's housing and land¬scaping; data about the feed and feeding methods used in the enterprises; milk production and hygienic criteria in the en-terprises and farm management. It was determined that the average age of sheep and goat breeders were 48,47% and they graduated from primary school at the rate of 75,20%. The number of family members for enterprises was detected as 5.36 and on working experience was determined 20.9 year. In the surveyed sheep and goat enterprises, the rates of semi-open and closed barns used as a house type were detected at an equal rate of 45,70%. In addition to poor pasture conditions for animals feed was mostly was given for winter months. Given the amount of rough and concentrate (kg/day) for sheep and goat enterprises were determined as 1.22 kg and 0.80 kg, respectively. It was detected that duration of suckling period of lambs and kids were between 4 to 6 months. The percentage of cleaning of the udders before milking was defined 48.40. For the evaluation method of sheep and goat milk; mostly made cheese with the percentage of 70.50. It was determined that most of sheep and goat enterprises (93,30%) mostly have not been trouble for receive information. The highest ratio (35,40%) was detected for Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry. Free mating system was most common (100%) for mating season in the sheep and goat enterprises. As a result, it was seen that feeling the impact of traditional methods on management and also have not any specific record almost every enterprise were one of the most important problems in despite of having information. It was thought that partners of small ruminant sector have to take part in effectively for increasing the production levels thereyby decreasing the existing problems.
