Disease prevalence in geriatric cats and dogs in Afyonkarahisar province

Aging is the sum of the detrimental effects of time on the cellular function, microanatomy and physiology of each body system. Aging is not a specific disease but a complex process consisting of genetic, biological, nutritional and environmental factors that contribute to the progressive decline called aging. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of geriatric diseases in dogs and cats in Afyonkarahisar province. The data of the study consisted of cats and dogs brought to Afyon Kocatepe University Veterinary Health Practice and Research Center for examination between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2023. The dogs and cats included in the study were grouped according to their breed, age, gender and diseases. In dogs, 9 years and older in small breeds, 8 years and older in medium breeds, and 6 years and older in large breeds were considered geriatric. In cats, the average geriatric age was accepted as 8 years regardless of breed. In this thesis study, it was revealed that the most frequently affected organ system in geriatric cats in Afyonkarahisar province was urinary system, cardiopulmonary system in small breed dogs, respiratory system in medium breed dogs and circulatory system in large breed dogs. In conclusion, regular health programs in geriatric cats and dogs can improve the welfare of geriatric animals and reduce the costs of diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
