Abstract (EN)
This study aimed to raise awareness about the multifaceted nature of aging and ageism in middle-old adulthood as experienced at the micro-, meso-, and macro-levels. It addressed the conceptualization, affirmative aspects, challenges, and coping mechanisms related to aging and ageism. Participants were 13 community-dwelling adults aged between 75 and 82 who were interviewed individually and face-to-face. Thematic analysis was utilized and the findings were verified through participant check and key informant interviews. Participants clearly differentiated between aging and being old associating being old with detachment from life, cognitive decline, and dependence on others. Although they experienced several indicators of aging, participants did not perceive themselves old. They acknowledged the benevolent aspects of ageism as respectful. Their reports of hostile ageism were based on observations of others rather than themselves and viewed as disrespectful. Despite their having strong social support, participants were not free from self-directed ageism. They were concerned about their narrowing social circles and social isolation. Social engagements and grandchildren appeared to be valuable coping means. Participants did not only report personal and relational issues, but also their concerns about society and younger generations. They pointed out needs for support in health and care services, community participation, and financial problems. Building intergenerational networks and peer solidarity were among their proposed interventions. Implications of these findings for counseling practice and social policies were discussed.
