The relationship between domestic violence and academic achievement for secondary school students: The case of Diyarbakır Bağlar

Domestic violence is an important fact today in terms of the source of different problems. Sociocultural, socioeconomic and socio-psychological factors are directly influential in the family. Students' academic success in school classes depends on the conditions, opportunities and relationships of their family environment. The subject of this research is the relationship between the types of violence experienced in the family and the academic success of the students. The research model which is the relational screening model used to determine the relationship between two and more variables. The applied technique is 'survey technique' and 'scale technique' which are frequently used in quantitative research. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between academic success and failures of secondary school students with domestic violence. The fact that such a topic has not been studied in the literature has revealed the importance of this research. The data obtained in the field survey conducted with the help of questionnaire and scale form on 1.750 students studying in secondary schools in Bağlar district of Diyarbakır province were interpreted by using SPSS, Chi-Square, T-Test and ANOVA statistical techniques. According to the findings, it was determined that the rate of physical violence experienced in the families of students who continue to secondary education in Bağlar region is approximately 69 % and psychological violence rate is 80 %. It was found that the rate of students who stated that they could not study at the time of physical violence at home or that they could not get efficiency even if they were employed was 71.4%. It was determined that the highest average among the types of violence in the family belonged to second psychological violence ( = 2.27; rarely) and the second to 'physical violence' ( =1.91; rarely). The highest number of school students exposed to physical violence was Vocational High School ( = 2,07), Anatolian High School ( =1,97) and Science High School ( = 1,84), respectively. On the other hand, it was revealed that the students who were exposed to the most physical violence in the family belonged to the ones with a grade point average of 0-50 ( = 2,06) fort he 8th grades. On the other hand, it was found that students with a grade point average of 81-90 ( = 1.78) were less exposed to physical violence in the family than those with a low average. In conclusion, this study has found a relationship between the presence of violence in the family and low academic achievement.
