The effects of thymoquinone on a cellular level in lung cancer

Abstract (EN)
OBJECTIVE: Studies demonstrate that Thymoquinone, which is the particularly bioactive component of Nigella Sativa (black cumin) components may have anticarcinogenic, antitumoral, antiulcerogenic, antibacterial, analgesic, antioxidant, hypoglycemic and strengthening the immune system effects. In our pilot study will investigate whether the thymoquinon's effective doses are related on the lung cancer's cell lines or not. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In Gaziantep University Cell Culture Laboratuary, A549 (Bronchoalveoler Carsinoma), HTB54 (Epidermoid Carsinoma) and BEAS2B (Normal Bronch Epithelium) cell lines will be replicated in culture environment, thymoquinone and cysplatin will be applied 10,100 ve 200 µM and cell lines viabilitiy will be evaluated. FINDINGS: We compare the effects of cisplatin and thymoquinone in equal concentration that applied to A549, HTB54 and BEAS2B cells. There were no changes in any cell that saline and chemical solvent solution (DMSO) applied. Any effect of chemicals was observed at 10 µM concentration. Thymoquinone at 100 and 200 µM and cisplatin at 200 µM concentration was found to be effective on all cells.It was observed that; cisplatin was not effective at 100 µM concentration and thymoquinone was toxic at 200 µM concentration. RESULTS: The effect of thymoquinone at 100 and 200 µM doses on A549, HTB54 and BEAS2B cells are more than the effects off cisplatin at the same doses. Cisplatin has no effect at 100 µM dose on HTB54 and A549 cells. Both chemicals are effective at 100 and 200 µM on BEAS2B cells. The effective dose of thymoquinone was found to be 100 µM and cisplatin 200 µM. Both chemical matters have similar toxicity at effective doses. As a result the effect of thymoquinone on the lung carsinoma cells is superior to cisplatin. Key Words: Lung carsinoma, Thymoquinone, Black cumin, cisplatin
