Abstract (EN)

Objective: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the demographic properties of emergency department intubations of patients for one year period. Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, data regarding indication for intubation, hemodynamic profiles of patients prior the intubation, preoxygenation method, the medication used for premedication, induction and paralysis, the type of laryngoscope, position of the patient during the intubation, Cormack-Lehane class, the number of intubation attempts, complications related to the procedure and the prognosis of the patients after the intubation was collected. Result: A total of 195 patients were included. The mean age of the population was 63±20 and 61,9% of the patients were male. The three most common indications for intubation were respiratory failure, head trauma, and cardiac arrest. 58% of the population were hemodynamically stable before the intubation. BVM was the airway device chosen for preoxygenation. Fentanyl was the agent used for premedication and induction agents of choice were ketamine and midazolam and rocuronium was the neuromuscular blocking agent. 87,6% of the study population were either CL I or II. During the first attempt, 68% of the time a video laryngoscope was the initial choice. 72,8% of the patients were intubated during the initial attempt. Intubation procedures were completed without complication in 113 of 195 patients and 91% of the study population were treated in our hospital. Conclusion: In the ED we studied, emergency intubation has a high and increasing success rate compared to previous studies. More studies are needed to improve intubation first-pass success and reduce complications.
