Özet (EN)

ABSTRACTBattery production and consumption is increasing from day to day as the number of vehiclesgrows. That?s why the subject of recycling of used batteries is becoming more and moreimportant as well as environmental and economic factors are concerned. These batteriesinclude lead and sulphuric acid both of which can be quiet hazardous if not properly handled. In Turkey, recycling industry is quiet developed but as illegal methods are employed, there isa possible danger for both human health and environment. In this study, environmental effects of battery recycling are emphasized. By examining theworld-wide used recycling methods, better collection, transport and recycling methods aresuggested from the point of view of human health and environment.Present rate of battery recycling in Turkey is about 95% but recycling industry only focuseson lead, lead compounds and plastic material all of which have trading value. Howeversulphuric acid which is a quiet hazardous waste is disposed of in an uncontrolled manner. This situation causes soil, air and water pollution. It is highly probable that if batteryrecycling is managed properly, this pollution can be prevented. In the study, application areas and importance of lead is also mentioned and world-wideproduction and consumption rates are examined. Keywords: Recycling of used lead-acid batteries, environmental effects of used lead-acidbatteries, recycling, management of used lead-acid batteries, leadx
