Evaluation the effect of diabetes on oxidative stress in patients with acute ischemic stroke

Abstract (EN)

The role of oxidative stress in etiopathogenesis of stroke has been extensively investigated in recent years. In this clinical study, the relationship between oxidant and antioxidant status was investigated in acute stroke patients with and without Diabetes Mellitus. For this purpose, 8-hydroxy 2 deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG), uric acid, Total Antioxidant Status (TAS), Total Oxidant Status (TOS), Nitric Oxide (NO), Thiol Disulfide Balance, Lipoprotein a [Lp(a)] have been investigated in relation to various factors. A total of 95 subjects were included in the study, 27 of whom were acute ischemic stroke patients (28.4%), 36 (37.9%) were acute ischemic stroke patients without diabetes, and 32 (33.7%) healthy control subjects. The research parameters were examined in Gaziantep University Medical Faculty Şahinbey Research and Application Hospital Central Laboratory Biochemistry Unit and Gaziantep University Medical Faculty Medical Biochemistry Department. Data obtained from the study were analyzed with SPSS 22.0 Package Program. Nitric oxide, native thiol, total thiol, dynamic disulfide, lipoprotein-a, 8-OH-dG, uric acid and TOS values of diabetic ischemic stroke patients were found significantly higher than the others. Again, the TAS level of the healthy control group was significantly higher than the patient group. Taking into account the results obtained from the study, it can be concluded that patients with diabetic ischemic stroke have a higher risk of exposure to oxidative stress.
