Abstract (EN)

The primary goals of this study are to bring up the conditions in the ship recycling industry with respect to occupational health and safety and to develop recommendations that target to improve these working conditions. It is expected that this study will supply to some certain extent the paucity of scientific studies over the world and in Turkey about occupational health and safety in that it is one of the precursor field studies tending directly towards the workers in this industry. As to the methodology, the data on the occupational accidents of the laborforce in those enterprises categorized as heavy and hazardous in Aliağa Dismantling Region and on the potential of labor contracting occupational dieases are collected by way of surveys and this data is then statistically analyzed. The key finding of the study is that the main causes of occupational accidents are negligence, personal conditions, inadequacy of safety measures and insufficient use of personal protective equipment; hence, these causes should be addressed primarily with longtime practical training that will raise awareness on the occupational health and safety. Measures should be taken to increase the use of personal protective equipment. This cross-sectional study on occupational accidents and occupational diseases will be a guide on the primary risks and measures within a risk assessment in the industry.
