Prof. Dr. Erol ÖZERThe investigated area, which tectono-stratigraphically studied, is locatedbetween Altınözü and Karbeyaz villages to the southeast of Hatay. AllocthonousKızıldağ Ophiolites, which was tectonically emplaced the region during UpperCretaceous, form the basement. Kızıldağ Ophiolite, which consists of tectonite, isdiscordantly overlain by autochthonous Upper Cretaceous age Kaleboğazı formationthat mainly comprises limestone, clayey limestone and marls. Middle-Upper Eoceneage Okçular formation comprising limestone, cherty limestone and clayey limestoneoverlie the Kaleboğazı formation with angular unconformity. Aquitanian-Burdigalianage Balyatağı formation, which mainly made up of conglomerates, and Sofularformation presenting reef characteristics have transitional contact with each other, overlies the Okçular formation with angular unconformity. Sofular formation istransitionally and conformably overlain by Langhian-Serravalian age Tepehanformation that is mainly represented by sandstone, clayey limestone, claystone andmarls. Upper Miocene age Nurzeytin formation that comprises sandstone, clayeylimestone, marls and claystone conformably and transitionally rests on the Tepehanformation. The youngest unit of the study area is Quaternary alluviums rest on the allolder units with angular unconformity. All the units cropping out in the study areahave been highly affected by strike slip deformation regime because of proximityand presence of the Amanos, East Anatolian and the Dead Sea strike slip faults.According to present structural properties observed in the area, the active stressregime in the Hatay region changed from strike slip regime to extensional regimeduring Late Quaternary. NE-SW trending extensional features have been evaluatedaccording to the observed and measured structural elements in the investigated area.Key words: Altınözü, Tectono-stratigraphy, Extensional tectonism, Dead Sea Fault
