Examining the relationship between Anatolian high school students' perceptions of the classroom evaluation atmosphere and their attitudes towards the English course

In this study, it was aimed to examine Anatolian high school students' perceptions of the classroom evaluation atmosphere and their attitudes towards the English course with the variables of gender, grade level, school type, recent general academic success and English grade point average. Descriptive and relational survey models, which are among the quantitative research methods, were used in the research. In order to collect data in the study, the attitude scale towards English course and the classroom evaluation atmosphere scale were used. The research was conducted in the 2022-2023 academic year with 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students studying in state/public Anatolian high schools located in the city center of Diyarbakır. Cluster random sampling method was used for the collection of data in the research. Data obtained from a total of 926 students (9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades) were analyzed with the help of the SPSS package program. In order to find answers to the research problems, skewness and kurtosis values were calculated and the data, which was generally found to be normally distributed, were analyzed using parametric methods. Student t-test, One way Anova, Kruskal Wallis H test and Pearson correlation coefficient analysis techniques were used to analyze the research data. As a result of the analysis of the data, it was determined that gender, class level, mother and father education level, receiving reinforcement support training and placement in high school were statistically effective variables in the attitudes of Anatolian high school students towards learning English. In addition, it has been observed that gender, mother and father education level, receiving reinforcement support training and placement in high school have a statistically significant effect on the opinions of students studying at Anatolian high school regarding the classroom evaluation atmosphere. As a result, it has been determined that as the level of learning-oriented evaluation atmosphere of students studying in Anatolian high school increases, their level of enjoyment of English, attitude towards extracurricular activities in English and attitude towards in-class activities in English increase. It has been observed that as the performance-oriented evaluation atmosphere levels of students studying in Anatolian high schools increase, their enjoyment of English, attitude towards extracurricular activities in English, and attitude towards English in-class activities decrease.
