Abstract (EN)

This study intended to investigate the 400 students? problems and sources of these problem about the Introduction to Mathematics course offered in open education system of Anadolu University, and explore the experts opinions about improving the effectiveness of distance math education. During the study both qualitative and quantitative data were collected. A survey instrument was used to collect data on the students? problems and their reasons regarding the Introduction to Mathematics course; and a series of individual semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data about the experts? opinions on how to improve the effectiveness of distance mathematics education. The study has shown that almost 75 percent of the learners are having problems in the course and the major reason is their shortage of previous mathematic experiences. Both the students as well as experts indicated that the designers of this course should consider the background of the students in mathematics while designing the learning activities and the content and also advance technologies must me integrated into instructional processes.
