Effect of nanoparticles in anaerobic membrane bioreactor (anMBR) on landfill leachate treatment and membrane performance

Abstract (EN)

In recent years, researchers have focused on membrane biorector (MBR) processes in order to increase the biological treatment efficiency of landfill leachate (LFL) with the development of new technologies. However, membrane fouling is the most important disadvantage of this process. In this context, strategies have been developed to reduce membrane fouling. The use of zero-valent iron (nZVI) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticulate materials in MBR is among the innovative strategies used to reduce membrane fouling and improve treatment performance. In this thesis stıdy, the treatment and membrane performance was investigated by adding nZVI and TiO2 nanoparticles into the anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) under different operational conditions. System performance was evaluated in three different stages. In the first two stages, synthesis and characterization of nanoparticle materials were determined. Then, in the last stage, nZVI and TiO2 were added to AnMBR under different operating conditions (50-300mg/L) to evaluate treatment and membrane performance. Study findings showed that changing nZVI and TiO2 operating conditions played an important role for system performance, and 100mg/L nZVI, 300mg/L TiO2 concentrations were determined as optimum. The fouling rates for nZVI and TiO2 were determined as 0.012mbar/min and 0.01mbar/min, and the corresponding membrane performances were observed to decrease by 68% and 75%. As a result of, ıt has been observed that the use of nanoparticle materials in AnMBR both increases the treatment performance and improves the membrane performance.
