Investigation of the suitability of medical illustrations in anatomy textbooks

As an extension of technological developments, the most important branch of graphic design, illustration, can be done in computer environment. The illustration process, which can cover a long time with traditional methods, is relatively shorter with the use of the computer. The digital illustration technique allows each artist to reflect their lines on a screen in a unique way. In this way, scientific illustration studies have shown great improvement. In medical education where visuality is indispensable, medical illustrations in textbooks have an important place in the field of scientific illustration. Because medical illustrations are detailed pictures made for instructive and descriptive purposes. Accordingly, the contribution of medical illustrations in textbooks to education is directly proportional to the students' academic achievement. In this thesis called 'Examination of the anatomy illustrations in anatomy textbooks for the purpose', classical anatomy illustrations in the textbooks have been researched. In the first part of the research, the definitions and general types of illustration are mentioned. In the second part, the importance of anatomy illustrations in medical science is examined under the main headings and in the third chapter, the problem state of the research is discussed. In the fourth section, the answers to the Likert scale were evaluated and results and suggestions were given. The three-dimensional models that can be displayed on mobile screens with the QR code links included in certain areas in the textbooks are an effective method according to the results of the Likert scale. Classical illustration techniques need to be developed in order for the instructors to explain information more easily, to give more permanent messages of anatomy models and to benefit students' academic success.
