The position and influence of Thomas Hobbes in the tradition of Anglo Saxon political philosophy

Britain has been the scene of many political, economic, and cultural crises from the first period it was an island to the 17th century. The great civil war of the 17th century is the outcome of England's inability to achieve political unity from the very beginning. During and after the civil war, famines, economic crisis, epidemics and unavoidable deaths, the oppressive religious tyranny of the Christian Middle Ages created great pressure on people. In this period, people have the mood to run wherever the voice of the cry for salvation rises. Renaissance, on the other hand, influenced almost every thinker of the period, as if trying to develop different philosophical activities and thoughts, especially conceptual studies, in order to move to a new and modern world order under science and art activities. Geographical discoveries, which are discoveries for the West, and the idea that the purpose of the new era in politics, which started with the development of Europe with trade, and the idea that people, who are the most basic elements of politics, should change, were defended, and implemented by the thinkers and ideologies of the period. Thomas Hobbes was highly influenced by the scientific developments of the modern period and adapted his methods to political science. This system that he built made him the first in his field. In the manner of a scientist, he has subjected politics and the person who created it to scrutiny. By dividing it into parts, he made sense of which concept refers to what, and then combined it to form the state. Thomas Hobbes has been read as thinker whose political philosophy concepts are widely known and discussed, and who argues that people are always self-interested and selfish with the expression of "homo homini lupus". However, as we aim in our study, Hobbes is a philosopher who has dealt with the human being in terms of being subject to the state. If he is not sovereign and subject to the state, the situation he is in will inevitably transform him into a form that he has described in the state of nature but not expressed in any of his works. The study aims to contribute to the literature in terms of understanding what Hobbes has put forward and reading him in the history of England.
