CHEMICAL OXIDATION OF ANILINE KADÎR TURHAN CHEMISTRY, ORGANIC CHEMISTRY KEYWORDS: Aniline, Oxidation SUMMARY: Aniline, the simplest aromatic amine, and many of its derivatives are extensively used in the rubber industry, textile industry, in the manufacture of various dyes and in the paper industry. The waste streams of such industries con tain aniline and its derivatives. Due to their carcinogenic properties, presence of such compounds in the wastes is det rimental to public health. Due to these reasons; the aim of this work is to remove aniline by chemical oxidation and ring cleavage. In the ex perimental part, six different reagents were used in seven different methods. In five of these methods the products re tained the aromatic ring. In the remaining two methods, in which the same reagent was used in different reaction condi tions, the product obtained no longer had aromatic properties The experiments have been successful in oxidising ani line chemically, but the reagents were not capaple of break ing the aromatic ring. The objective of ring cleavage may be fulfilled by the use of more effective oxidizing agents, e.g. ozone.
