Vaccination status of ankara 112 emergency services workes against hepatitis b, tetanus, influenza, swine flu (H1N1) and evaluation of some contributing factors

Abstract (EN)

112 emergency medical services personnel who taking risk for exposure to infections and communicable diseases while performing medical procedures, to be vaccinated against vaccine-preventable diseases is an important issue that must be addressed.This study was designed as a cross-sectional study to define immunization status of Ankara 112 emergency medical services personnel against hepatitis B, tetanus, influenza and swine flu (influenza A, H1N1) and evaluate some contributing factors.In this study, 727 participant (%70.2) have reached a total of 1035 personnel who works Ankara 112 emergency medical services. Face-to-face questionnare method was used as a data collection method. All data loaded on computer. All statistical analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 15,0 for Windows. The obtained data was evaluated using percentage distributions and chi-square test.55.8% of the participants were female. The mean age was 31.4 ± 8.1. The average duration of working in profession was 8.9 ± 6.4 years and average duration of working in Ankara 112 emergency medical services was 4.2 ± 4.0 years for all participants. Among communicable diseases, the most spontaneously mentioned as posing a risk of acquisition in the workplace were hepatitis B (91.4%), hepatitis C (78%), HIV (63.9%), swine flu (40.8%), influenza (34.5%), tuberculosis (30.3%), meningitis (22.5%), tetanus (19.2%), Hepatitis A (15.2%), pneumonia (11.5%), Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) (9.6%), avian influenza (5.9%), Hepatitis D (3.2%) in order of frequency.In our study, hepatitis B full dose ( 3 series) vaccination rate 55.6%; swine flu vaccination rate of 20%, the last season (2009 October-November period) influenza vaccination rate 16.8% and Tetanus vaccination rate before the last 10 year period 65.7% were determined.29.5% percent of the participants were exposed to needlestick-sharp and similar occupational injuries in the last year period. Last yearly injury average was 1.92 ± 1.18.As a result,the vaccination rates of Ankara 112 emergency medical services workers against hepatitis B, influenza, swine flu and tetanus were lower than literature. The frequency of occupational injury and injury status were consistent with the findings of the literature.Key words: emergency medical services, vaccination, hepatitis B, influenza, tetanus.
