A socio-cultural analysis of live music venues in Ankara

The primary aim of this study is to analyze the socio-cultural structures of live music venues such as cafés, bars, taverns (meyhane), and nightclubs (gazino/pavyon/gece kulübü) operating in Ankara, and to reveal the transformations these structures have undergone over time. In this research, a cultural analysis and case study approach based on qualitative methods were employed. Through participant observation and direct/indirect interviews, the relationships among venue owners, musicians, and customers were examined to uncover how music, space, social structure, and culture influence one another, as well as to identify the cultural identities of those visiting these venues. Ankara, located in a strategic position in the Central Anatolia Region and characterized by its ethnic and cultural diversity, became a cosmopolitan and bureaucratic city following the proclamation of the Republic and its designation as the capital. On the other hand, due to its central location in Anatolia and its historical role as a crossroads of various civilizations, the city and its surrounding region possess a rich cultural heritage. Ankara's status as the capital, its bureaucratic character, and its identity as an educational city hosting numerous universities have contributed to its richness not only administratively but also socio-culturally. This multicultural structure has given rise to musical diversity, which in turn is reflected in the city's live music venues. Ankara's multilayered and cosmopolitan nature has prevented live music venues from being concentrated solely in certain areas, enabling their spread throughout the city as it expanded and developed into a polycentric urban structure. At the same time, changes in regional culture and social dynamics have led to variations in musical preferences, as well as in the structure and operation of live music venues. In this context, the musical tendencies of the venues, the musicians working there, and the audience have evolved in relation to the socio-cultural dynamics they are embedded in. Live music venues in Ankara are classified into four main categories: cafés, bars, taverns (meyhane), and nightclubs (gazino/pavyon). This classification was made by considering the structural characteristics and functions of these venues. Accordingly, the study aims to reveal the impact of live music venues in Ankara on the diversity of the city's entertainment culture, its cultural identity, and its social structure. It has been observed that live music venues in Ankara have expanded geographically over time and, in parallel with the changing socio-cultural structure, have diversified and transformed musically. In this regard, factors such as regional culture, cultural identity, and social structure have directly influenced the functioning of these venues, the profiles of their audiences, and the musical practices of the performers. Consequently, it has been concluded that the culture of live music venues in Ankara constitutes a dynamic structure shaped by varying socio-cultural contexts across different regions and time periods.
