Ankara'daki ticaret meslek lisesi öğrencilerinin matematik dersindeki motivasyonunu etkileyen faktörler

The primary aim of the study is to explore the factors that effect motivation of students towards mathematics in trade vocational high schools in Ankara as perceived by their mathematics teachers.This study was conducted with an exploratory mixed-methods design which included two phases. Trade vocational high schools which consisted of Accounting and Financing department were the sample of this study. Focus group interview was conducted with seven mathematics teachers in the first phase. Afterwards, findings from the interview were analyzed by content analysis and a survey was developed based on these findings. In the second phase of this study, data were collected by using survey from 31 mathematics teachers from six trade vocational high schools in Ankara, Turkey.The results presented that external incentives are more efficient than internal incentives for trade vocational high school students. One of the external incentives?the most effective factor?was found that students were studying mathematics in order to obtain a high school degree. Furthermore, the goal orientation theory was found between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation that shows the trade vocational high school students are less impressed by the desire of having skills for a successful professional life. The results of this study presented that the students do not have enough self-esteem in terms of not only having successful professional lives but also of achieving mathematics within lessons. Furthermore, the teachers stated that the curriculum does not satisfy students? professional needs, as it is not suitable for students? mathematics knowledge level.
