A research on suicide attempts in the emergency deparment of a public hospital in Ankara province

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors associated with suicide and relationship within these factors. It has been performed a descriptive research on 95 suicide attempts with face to face interview method in the emergency department of Ministry of Health Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt Dışkapı Research and Education Hospital at 05.01.2006-16.06.2006. It has been interviewed with 95 cases of suicide attempts during research period. 85,3% cases of suicide attempts were at age 30 or under. The suicide attempt risk of the women was 5,3 times higher than the men. 51,6% of cases were single, 63,3% were living without a partner. The 15,8% of the cases evaluated themselves as ?poor?.18,9% cases had committed at least one previous suicide attempt. There have been death of one of parents on 6,4% cases under 18 years old. There was a history of death in the family of 13,7% cases last one year. The parents of 15,8% cases had been separated from one another under 18 years old. Marital status of 38,9 % cases had changed or they were left by their intimate partners. Socioeconomic condition of 38,9% cases had been decreased within last one year. Religious belief of 98,9% cases had been Islam by their opinion. There was 8,4 % history of suicide attempts , 20 % family history of mental illness within first degree relatives of cases. 4,2 % cases had drunk alcohol every day. Other substance dependence had been present within 1,1 % cases. 44,2 % cases had used cigarettes. 4,4% cases had experienced childhood sexual abuse by adults. There were adult sexual abuse (3,2 % by partners, friends or intimate partner, 7,4 % by strangers), physical violence ( 24,2 %), emotional abuse (47,4%), psychological neglect (47,7% both within family and outdoor environment), witness to physical trauma ( % 26,3 against to relatives, % 30,5 against to strangers), witness to sexual abuse ( % 4,2 against to relatives, % 9,6 against to strangers ). Biological, psychological, and cultural factors all have a significant impact on the risk of suicide in any individual. Risk factors associated with suicide include serious mental illness, alcohol and drug abuse, childhood abuse, loss of a loved one, joblessness and loss of economic security, and other cultural and societal influences. Resiliency and coping skills, on the other hand, can reduce the risk of suicide. Social support, including close relationships, is a protective factor.
