Isolation of Arcobacter spp. from chicken meat samples sold in Ankara and the antibiotic sensitivities of those isolates

Thesis)Çiğdem DOKSANÜÇOĞLUGAZ UNIVERSITYINSTUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYOctober 2006ABSTRACTIn this study, a total of 90 samples of chicken breast, drumstick, wingwere analysed for the presence of Arcobacter spp. According to ourresults, A. butzleri isolated from 19 (63,4 %), 14 (46,7 %), 16 (53,4 %) ofthe chicken breast, drumstick, wing samples, respectively. Moreover, A.cryaerophilus isolated from 3 (10%), 2 (6,7 %), 2 (6,7 %) of the chickenbreast, drumstick, wing samples, respectively.In addition, antibiotic susceptibilities of Arcobacter isolates werestudied with Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion test by using 8 differentantibiotics on Mueller-Hinton agar supplemented with 5 % defibrinatedsheep blood: Ampisilin (10 µg), Eritromisin (15 µg), Gentamisin (10 µg),Kloramfenikol (30 µg), Nalidiksik Asit (30 µg), Sefalotin (30 µg),Tetrasiklin (30 µg), and Vankomisin (30 µg).According to the results, all Arcobacter isolates were susceptible togentamicin and tetracycline and resistant to vancomycin. A. butzleriwas resistant to sephalothin, erythromycin, chloramphenicol, nalidixicacid and ampicillin at the rate of 100 %, 12,3 %, 36,8 %, 40,9 % and 81,7% respectively.
