The analysis of the relation between irrational beliefsof parents-their parantel behaviors and the perceivedfamily relations of children-their sense of self

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between parents' irrational beliefs and parenting behaviors, and the perceived family relationship and self-perception of children. Correlational survey model was used in the research. For the research, 12 primary schools in 10 education regions of Antakya, the central district of Hatay, were determined by the stratified sampling method. The research was conducted with 1500 people consisting of 500 students, who were in the 4th grade in the aforementioned schools, and their parents during the spring term of 2018-2019 academic year. In the research, the following data collection tools were used: Personal Information Form to collect information about the demographic characteristics of parents and children, the Parents' Thoughts Scale (PTS) to measure the irrational beliefs of parents, and the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (APQ) to measure parenting behaviors, the Family Relationship Scale for Children (FRSC) to measure the family relationship perceived by the students and the Self–Perception Profile for Children (SPPC) to measure their self-perception. In the analysis of the data obtained from the research, independent samples t-test, simple linear correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were run. In addition, while analyzing the sub-dimensions of APQ's mother form, namely, parental involvement, poor monitorin/supervision, corporal punishment and positive parenting, Mann-Whitney U test, which is the non-parametric equivalent of independent samples t-test, was used. According to the results of the statistical analysis, there is a significant difference between the irrational beliefs and parenting behaviors of parents, and children's family perception and general self-values. There is a significant relationship between parents' irrational beliefs, parenting behavior, family relationships perceived by children and their general self-values. Finally, according to the regression analysis, it was concluded that supportive family relationship, discouraging family relationship, unrealistic expectations of parents, fathers' involvement with children, poor parental monitoring/supervision and corporal punishment behaviors predict the general self-worth level of the child.
