Özet (EN)
This study aims to evaluate the global competitive power of Antalya cut flower sector according to the conceptual framework of Porter?s Diamond Model and the resource based view. These two approaches were used in combination in order to complement the evaluation of the internal factors which are left uncovered by the Diamond Model. It is expected that the field study which was carried out in this basic framework will shed light on the structural problems that curtail the competitive power of the cut flower sector in Antalya which has recently begun to grow rapidly and establish a base in the world flower exports.Evaluation of the global competitive power of Antalya cut flower exporters is important because this cluster active in Antalya is responsible for approximately 95 percent of Turkish cut flower exports and is already a part of the global commodity chain. On the other hand, no detailed analysis and study exists in literature concerning the global competitive power, though there are some publications about the cut flower sector in Turkey. This study on the Antalya?s export cluster which dominates the Turkish cut flower industry will fill this gap in literaure. In this study, first the cut flower sector in the world and Turkey were introduced and then different theories for expaining the competitive power of national industries and various studies examining the global competitive advantage of the leading nations in cut flower trade in the world were summarized. The last part of this thesis reports the methodology and findings of the field study which was conducted to evaluate the global competitive power of the cut flower exporters in Antalya. The sample of the study comprises 35 active firms which dominate the cut flower sector in Antalya. It was calculated that this sample is responsible for 95% of the official exports of the Turkish cut flower sector. The study was conducted by a questionnaire prepared by the researcher, based on the literature on the determinants of Porter?s Diamond Model and the resource based view, and the questionnaire was administered through face to face interview with firm managers.Findings of the study revealed that Antalya cut flower exporters were lacking in some factor and demand conditions, firms in the sector were generally in small scale and their strategies for R&D and innovation were insufficient, in some connected and supporting industries there was dependence on actors out of the region or abroad, local institutional cooperation and state support were found to be insufficient, and from the viewpoint of the resource based view, the resources owned by the sector firms generally remained at mediocre levels, and within this context suggestions were forwarded to the stakeholders of the sector.
