Cushion weavings identified in Bahtılı, Konyaaltı, Antalya (Kilimci Nejdet Collection)

The art of weaving, an integral component of Turkish culture and art, has been enriched throughout history with various weaving techniques and artistic works across different periods. It is known that the interest of Turks in the art of weaving emerged in conjunction with the nomadic lifestyle that began in Central Asia. In the nomadic lifestyle, Turks needed to weave to produce their clothing, tents, and decorative items, and they have refined these skills over time. One of the significant products in the weaving art of Turks is carpet weaving, which is considered amongst the most valuable works of Turkish art. Turkish carpets are recognized for their intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and high quality. The weaving art of Turks is not limited to kilim, carpet, and fabric weaving. Products such as tents and bags, saddlebags, sacks, and cushion weaving are also masterfully produced. Even though it is somewhat rare today, in many regions of Turkey, the art of weaving continues to thrive with traditional methods still being employed. This master's thesis focuses on the examination of cushion rugs originating from various regions of Turkey. The research undertakes the analysis of cushion rugs in the private collection of Kilimci Nejdet, located in Konyaaltı Bahtılı, Antalya, by examining the characteristics attributed to the regions of Denizli/Çal, Kars, Taşpınar, Konya, Niğde, Kırşehir, Antep, Denizli, and the Caucasus in these rugs. The information regarding the regions of the cushion rugs identified in the collection has been provided by Nejdet AKPINAR, who is both the owner of the store and a collector. The information obtained from the informant has been corroborated and compared with literature data. The research employs a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative methods encompass a detailed examination of the patterns, colors, and compositions of the carpets, while quantitative methods involve analyzing the dimensions, materials used, weaving techniques, and the quality of weaving in the carpets. These qualitative and quantitative analyses facilitate a more objective and measurable assessment of the physical properties and value of the rugs. This study aims to contribute to the literature on cushion rugs in the interest of preserving these valuable cultural assets and transmitting them to future generations. In this context, the research emphasizes the historical and cultural importance of cushion rugs and aims to enrich the scientific literature in this field. Moreover, this study seeks to facilitate a better understanding of the techniques and materials used in the production of cushion rugs. Keywords: Weaving, Carpet, Cushion, Motif, Antalya, Bahtılı.
