The distribution of lionfish species in the Gulf of Antalya

Abstract (EN)
In this study, the distribution of 2 lion fish species living in the Mediterranean coast of our country is examined. For this purpose, 7 sampling stations were selected in the gulf of Antalya. These stations were Gazipaşa women beach, Alanya port, Side ancient city, Antalya yacht marina, Antalya marine aquarium artificial reef station, Kemer döküntü, Antalya Kumluca from east to west, respectively. Sampling was conducted twice a year in summer and winter seasons. The samples were constructed from 0 to 25 m depths of the sea. Visual counting method was used and underwater data were recorded on underwater note boards. The status of lion fish, density, structure of the bottom and the numbers of fish in m2 were determined by underwater photographs and video cameras. As a result, both lionfish species (Pterois miles and Pterois volitans) were found. The maximum density was determined at the Antalya Marine Aquarium Water intake pipe system. The lowest density was determined at Side station. The densities were calculated as Gazipaşa women beach 2.2; Alanya marina 3.2; Side ancient city 0.7; Antalya yacht port 1.5; Antalya marine aquarium artificial reef station 5.6; Kemer döküntü 4.2 and Antalya Kumluca 1.4 ind/ m2 was determined, from east to west, respectively. In the study, it was determined that lion fish were found in all depths from 5 m to 25 m. In observations, lion fish in the selection of substrate; reefs and artificial reefs are more preferable than sands and muddy bottoms. Also they were selected the sheltered substrates like Serranidae family members or octopus. As a result of the research, it was found that the density of these fish increased in the summer and winter season due to new individuals participating in the population; new individuals did not migrate to these areas.
