Dyeing of woven fabrics with antibacterial properties

Today, the increase in the carcinogenic effect as a result of dyeing using synthetic dyes and the deterioration of the ecological balance due to the damage to the environment have led people to work with natural products again. This orientation has helped to determine the effects of antibacterial plants used in natural dyeing and to prevent the rapidly increasing resistance against synthetic products. Designs made with natural dyes will also reduce the cost. At the same time, it is thought that it will create an alternative to be used in designs. For this reason, according to the literature research, it was determined that turmeric (Curcuma Longa) and thyme (Thymus) plants have antibacterial properties and dyeing process was carried out on the %100 cotton woven fabric. Within the scope of the study, 100% cotton woven mask fabric samples were dyed with and without mordant, with turmeric (Curcuma longa) and thyme (Thymus) plant extracts. Potassium Aluminum Sulphate (KAI(SO4)2.12H2O), which is known to have minimal environmental damage, was used as mordant material. CIELab color values, saliva, washing, sweat, rubbing fastnesses and antibacterial activity determination tests were applied to the dyed woven fabric samples . As a result, yellow color and tones were obtained in dyeing using turmeric (Curcuma longa) plant, while brown tones were obtained in dyeing using thyme (Thymus) plant. When the test results of the color fastness values were examined, it was observed that the staining and color change values were good. It was concluded that antibacterial tests were effective against selected bacteria.
