The investigation of PON1 activity and MDA levels in patients with epilepsy not receiving antiepileptic treatment

Epilepsy is a chronic disease that the societies in the developed and developing countries must face affecting more or less 1 % of the population there. It can affect morbidity, mortality and working performance causing labour loss. The treatment of the disease is based on medicaments that reduce the stimulation of neurons or hinder the expansion of the epileptic activity. There are many studies realized to research the etiopathogenesis of the Epilepsy disorder. In such researches, oxidative and antioxidant indicators in terms of etiopathogenesis are also put under the scope. While outcomes come to light in these studies pointing out that oxidative stress could also play a role in the pathogenesis of epilepsy seizures, there are some other researches indicating that this stress could be caused by epileptic medicaments. We have tried to evidence in this study, drawing on the patients with epilepsy receiving no treatment, whether or not an increase in oxidative indicators is directly linked with the disorder independently of epileptic medicaments. 30 people in good health and 30 not-tantalized patients with epilepsy who received ambulatory treatment in the polyclinic of the Neurology Department in Dicle University took part in the study. The tests relating to serum malondialdehyde levels (MDA) and paraoxonase 1 activity (PON1) were made in the Biochemistry Laboratory in Dicle University. In the final analysis, even though the level of MDA in the patient group (14,34±3,59) have turned out be higher compared to the MDA levels of the control group with people in good health (13,53±3,56), it was not a statistically significant level all the same. PON1 activity in the serums taken from people in the patient group (0,65±0,17) have turned out to be lower in comparison to the PON1 activity emerged in the serums of the control group (0,71±0,17), nonetheless, it wasn't a lowness having significance from statistical point of view. In conclusion, while PON1 activities were lower and MDA levels were higher in the patient group compared to those of the control group, these findings weren't found to be statistically significant (p>0.05). we have come to the conclusion that such a high level in oxidative parameters should have been related to the disease and statistically significant findings emerged in some other studies could have been bound to an antiepileptic treatment. More comprehensive studies to be realized with more samples would shed more light on the issue of etiopathogenesis. Key Words: Epilepsy, Malondialdehyde, Paraoxonase 1 Activity
