Abstract (EN)
Sculpture has three dimensions except for other visual arts. So it gives the opportunutiy to the viewers to understand itself by walking around it. This is the reason why colors are not needed to give depths in meaning. At first, scupltors must deal with form issues to produce depth illusion by using materials, not like painters who need colors to produce depth. Most artists cannot approve using colors in sculpturing. However some sculptors have used colors for differenet reasons since ancient times. Its undeniable truth that ancient greek sculptures which are not known as colorful sculptures till 20th century, made great amount of contrubition to art of sculpture. The assumption of the colorful antic greek sculptures was rejected by many artists at first, but they had to give up their prejudices when this assumption was supported by scientific evidences. In this thesis study, by considering the antic greek statues, the color on figurative sculptures is investigated. Effects of using colors on statues and changes in forms that was made by usage of colors, are examined. In this context, The Ancient Greek Sculptures are taken up in their own periods with examples of works in the periods that are mentioned. Colored sculptures that were made after Ancient greek period are inspected in two different sections such as religious and non religious. The examples from each section have been presented. With these examples, the effects of the color on the sculpture forms are investigated. Existing results are supported by examples in practice section.
