Abstract (EN)
This study was conducted to determine the housing typology of the city of Antioch in the 3rd-4th centuries AD using archaeological data, and to establish the housing identity in relation to the political, socio-economic, and cultural structure of the period and the natural events that influenced it. In this context, House of Aion, House of the Evil Eye, House of the Peddler of Erotes, House of the Drunken Dionysus, which are dated to the 3rd-4th centuries AD and were unearthed during excavations carried out in Antioch between 1932-1939, and the House of Euphrosynos, which was found during cable car construction works in the İplik Bazaar area of Kurtuluş Street in Antioch between 2012-2016 and identified during rescue excavations carried out by the Hatay Museum, have been taken into consideration. The plan of the houses, the stylistic, iconographic, and thematic evaluation of the interior mosaics, and the establishment of a relationship between the finds and the space have been used to construct a typology of 3rd-4th century AD Antioch houses. The Euphrosynos house has been examined separately, and its mosaics and archaeological deposits have been cataloged. Two plan types have been observed in the residences dating to the 3rd-4th centuries AD in Antioch. The first is the triclinium-columned portico plan arrangement. The second is a plan type consisting of spaces arranged around a colonnaded courtyard. The first plan type is seen in House of the Peddler of Erotes, and House of the Drunken Dionysus; the second plan type is seen in the House of Aion and House of the Evil Eye. The House of Euphrosynos replicates the first plan with the addition of an atrium. The mosaic floors of the examined residences feature depictions of Greek mythological stories and characters, excerpts from literary texts, representations expressing luxury, fertility, and abundance, as well as rich and ornate geometric motifs. Due to the inability to systematically collect the interior finds in the 1930s, sufficient data to support the chronology of the house could not be obtained. The finds from the House of Euphrosynos consist of examples dating from the 3rd-4th centuries AD to the 5th-6th centuries AD, based on analogy and context, and support the chronology of the dwelling.
