Özet (EN)

Currrently, coronary artery disease is the most commonly seen form of cardiovascular disease and despite improvements in its treatments and well-defined risk factors it remains with high mortality and morbidity. Acute coronary syndrome is a clinical entity which emerges as a result of sudden reduction in the coronary blood flow. In recent decades, despite efforts to improve defined risk factors and the developments in treatments, the incidence of coronary artery disease is not decreased and still remains mortal. This guides the researchers to identify new risk factors. Adipose tissue produces several biologically active peptides, known as adipocytokine, which have different physiological functions. In addition to known risk factors, a variety of molecules are known to play a role in coronary artery diseases. Apelin is relatively a new adipocytokine that has different effects on the cardiovascular system. In our study, we aimed to evaluate serum apelin levels in patients with acute coronary syndrome.Forty patients with acute coronary syndrome and the control group consisting of 40 healthy volunteers were included in the study. In addition to routine blood tests, serum apelin levels, fasting blood glucose and lipid profile were measured in each patient and these patients' BMI was recorded. When groups were compared, statistically no significant difference was found between mean ages and BMI in terms of demographic features (p>0.05). In terms of apelin levels, statistical significance was found between groups (p<0.05). The mean apelin level was found 0,75 ± 0,27 ng / ml in acute coronary syndrome group, and 1,32 ± 0,39 ng / ml in the control group. As a result, we determined that serum apelin levels in patients with acute coronary syndrome was found statistically lower than normal population. When other factors were excluded, this study shows that apelin provide a fertile soil for coronary artery disease through the detection of lower levels of apelin in patients with acute coronary syndrome and the inhibition of atherosclerosis by apelin showed in previous experimental studies. However, more comprehensive and further studies are needed for the role of apelin in coronary artery disease.Key words: Acute coronary syndrome, apelin
