Material development towards it-clefts within the framework of interface hypothesis

Cleft constructions which have taken the attention of linguists since 1970s, have been classified according to their syntactic structures and the items that they have included and depending on the classification their functions have been studied. There are not many studies in English language with cleft constructions that are observed in different forms in various languages. Cleft constructions in English always provide a testing basis for the linguistic voices. The studies in which the cleft constructions have been evaluated as independent structures are generally in sentence level, not evaluated in context and when the coursebooks and materials which are prepared to teach this structure are studied it is obvious that the structure has been presented not in functional, but from the structural aspect. The present study's aim is determined as preparing structural and functional materials in cleft contructions for the learners of English language. In accordance with this aim, cleft contructions which are classified in syntax-discoursepragmatics interface in our study, within the frame of Interface Hypothesis which is difficult to learn and become functional, in order to teach this structure in an effective way, first It-clefts' syntactic and discoursepragmatics features have been identified and exemplified. Afterwards, as Eclectic Method has offered an integrated approach and provides different language methods to be used in the teaching environment, within this discoursepragmatics features materials have been prepared to teach It-clefts and these materials have been discussed.
