Abstract (EN)

This study aims to address some of the challenges encountered in the field of consecutive interpreting, specifically within the Arabic-Turkish language pair. Interpreting is a crucial tool for overcoming language barriers in communication, and it is becoming increasingly important in today's globalized world. However, interpreting is a complex process in which interpreters face numerous challenges. Elements such as the linguistic and cultural differences between Arabic and Turkish pose difficulties in consecutive interpreting. In the first part of this study, the subtypes of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting are discussed. General information is provided about the subtypes of consecutive interpreting, such as liaison interpreting, bilateral interpreting, escort interpreting, and telephone interpreting. The second part offers an overview of interpreting, discussing the different areas of use, processes, and the current situation of this practice in Turkey. Note-taking techniques, which are a fundamental component of the consecutive interpreting process, are also examined in detail in this section. The third part addresses the challenges encountered when performing consecutive interpreting from Arabic into Turkish. These challenges include the use of dialects, idiomatic expressions, incomplete or unfinished sentence structures, syntax rules, numbers, and numerical expressions. This study also touches upon the knowledge and skills necessary for interpreters to cope with these difficulties. In this context, the study can be considered an important resource for improving the quality of Arabic-Turkish consecutive interpreting and contributing to the professional development of interpreters. In this study, which employed the descriptive method, the survey and interview techniques were used. As a data collection tool, a questionnaire was prepared in accordance with the aim of the research. The survey includes questions aimed at identifying the challenges faced by students studying in the Arabic Translation and Interpretation department and interpreters working in the field during the consecutive interpretation process, as well as the strategies they use to overcome these challenges. The results obtained from the survey data were evaluated, and the study was completed with conclusions and recommendations.
