Özet (EN)
This study focuses on the feminine archetypes, consciously or unconsciously employed by Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, a prominent figure of early 20th-century French literature known for her originality and the numerous controversies surrounding both her life and her works. These archetypes will be examined in the first three books of the Claudine series, which she wrote at the beginning of her literary career. The titles of the three novels in question are: Claudine à l'école (1900), Claudine à Paris (1901), and Claudine en ménage (1902). This study will analyze the emergence, adaptation, and transformations of these archetypes within these books. The essence of our research is based on the idea that artists, often unconsciously, draw from an inventory of images referred to as the "collective unconscious", a concept developed following the work of the renowned psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung. This concept designates a sort of reservoir of images with which the human psyche has been in contact since the beginning of time. These images are known as "archetypes". Our goal is to identify those archetypes related to femininity in Colette's works and to define their place within the vast universe of myths. In doing so, we aim to achieve a more holistic understanding of both the functioning of archetypes in artistic works and the artistic production of our author. In the first half of the 20th century, by combining the terms "collective" and "unconscious," Jung placed this concept at the heart of analytical psychology. Being influenced by many thinkers before him, Jung himself inspired specialists in various fields, including literary criticism. Jung's role in the development of the method of mythocriticism, pioneered by the French philosopher, critic, and literary scholar Gilbert Durand, is undeniable. We have adopted this approach, which fundamentally relies on the analysis and interpretation of mythic elements in works of art, for our thesis. In applying this method to the selected works, we have also drawn on the work of the French literary critic Pierre Brunel. The concept of archetype is at the centre of our study. The various representations and images of archetypes, as primitive models, manifest across all cultures, regardless of time and space. These entities, possessing a universal and transcendent structure, find opportunities to materialize in tales, myths, rituals, and any form of artistic creation. Archetypal criticism is a method that focuses on archetypes that become visible in the products of the imagination. Emerging in the 20th century, this literary critical method is distinguished by its interdisciplinary nature. Drawing from fields such as history, psychology, and anthropology, it analyses works of art with the aim of discovering and defining the archetypes they contain. Since it also concentrates on mythic and archetypal elements, the difference between archetypal criticism and mythocriticism is quite minimal, leading to archetypal criticism often being situated within mythocriticism. Therefore, we can assert that the primary approach adopted in this study is mythocriticism, with a particular emphasis on archetypes. Here, we wish to explain why we have limited our study to feminine archetypes. This choice arises, on one hand, from our desire to establish a more confined framework within a very broad field, and on the other hand, from the nature of the source from which our author has consciously or (rather) unconsciously drawn in her literary creation. Indeed, Colette is an author who draws from femininity, from feminine energy. To achieve our objective, the first part of our study will focus on the concept of archetype, exploring Jung's theory, its applications in literature, and its relationship to the imaginary. This section, which will also introduce the methods of mythocriticism and archetypal criticism, will be primarily dedicated to theoretical knowledge and the historical background of these concepts. The second part begins with an examination of the paratextual features of the three novels. At this stage, we have utilized the work of the French literary theorist Gérard Genette. In this context, the titles and covers of the works in question were analysed, and we discussed the effects and directions these two elements might have on us and on readers, as well as their potential to direct us toward certain myths or archetypes. The conclusions drawn are as follows: first, the simplicity of the titles reflects the straightforward language of the works. When examining the titles of the three novels together, we can perceive, through their continuity and their emphasis on the situation of the main character, that the first three books of the series address the transition from girlhood to womanhood. We can infer that we will witness the heroine's inner journey and initiation process: first at school (Claudine à l'école), then in the big city (Claudine à Paris), and finally in marriage (Claudine en ménage). At this stage, we can anticipate the presence of the "hero's journey" archetype, on which Joseph Campbell has extensively worked. Additionally, we explore the references that the concepts of Paris and marriage might make to certain archetypal or mythical elements. In our analysis of the covers, we emphasize that the choice of covers, which varies across different editions, reflects the personalities of the main characters. Next, we undertook an analysis of the main female characters in the three novels. In this context, the characters of Claudine, Olympe Sergent, Aimée Lanthenay, and Rézi Lambrook were examined, with a focus on the archetypes that guide them. In this regard, we highlighted Claudine's relationship with nature and the earth. Her independence, behaviours outside the role assigned to women of her time, her unconventional moral outlook, her wildness, and her energy led us to identify the archetypes of the "rebel" and the "wild woman." According to the previously mentioned archetypal theme of the "hero's journey," Claudine departs from her beloved Montigny, marking the beginning of her initiation process with her move to the big city, overcoming obstacles to self-discovery, and finally returning to her starting point, closer than ever to her true self. Regarding the other three female characters studied in this section, we encountered different representations of the "femme fatale" archetype. At the end of this section, we focused on the representation and significance of the "mother" archetype in the works. We concluded that this archetype could be the central theme of the first three books of the series. Furthermore, the "mother" archetype, which we observe in numerous manifestations throughout the novels, occupies a crucial place not only in Claudine's life but also in Colette's. Finally, in the third part, we analysed Claudine, the narrator and protagonist of the series, based on Jung's three fundamental archetypes: the persona, the shadow, and the animus. From this perspective, we explored Claudine's fragility concealed behind her sarcastic and frank mask; the projection of her shadow and animus onto other characters, as well as her integration with these two archetypes. In conclusion, in this study, we sought to identify and analyse the archetypal characters, images, and situations present in the selected works within the framework of mythocriticism and archetypal criticism. We also aimed to examine their transformations and connections with the collective unconscious. By doing so, we aimed to gain a better understanding of the mythic language that the author uses largely unconsciously and to provide a richer interpretation of the works in question.
