Structure of classical drama from Aristotle to Freytag

Concepts of drama analysis and construction of drama in Western theatre are discussed through Poetics of Aristotle, and principles and concepts introduced by Aristotle are considered as the primary references through the ages. Gustav Freytag, with his book Technique of Drama written in 1863, pays tribute to the Poetics from the 19th century world of theatre, while attempting to produce a modern interpretation of principles and concepts of Aristotle. Freytag gives the central role to concept of structural analysis in examining of the dramatic text. He exhibits the outcome of his work in a diagram later called as Freytag's Pyramid. This diagram is acknowledged as the structural outline of the classical drama. In this research, the concepts related to the structure of the drama in Poetics are being focused on and how these concepts are influential on the Renaissance Era and Shakespeare is reviewed; the notion of Drama in Freytag's day and aspects of structural analysis introduced by Freytag's Pyramid are being studied and discussed through Shakespeare's plays.
