Being student in a slum: An ethnographic analysis of school in English

This study aims to perform an in-depth analysis of a cosmopolitan neighbourhood, including the effect of migration, crime, violence and poverty on the schooling life of students; and the linkages between cultural codes the students are expected to achieve at school and their private lives, which shall be elaborated from Bourdieu's perspective on the 'context of cultural capital, habitus and re-production.' The study uses the ethnography pattern as a qualitative research methodology. As the study group, 7 teachers and 6 parents were selected with the maximum diversity technique from purposeful sampling methods from the school where the researcher teaches. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews with teachers and parents. The researcher conducted the study personally, using the participant observation method. Findings have been arranged, cause and effect relations elaborated and interpreted using descriptive analysis. The profile of the neighbourhood where the school was located is fully representative of the ghetto format, which is a product of the reflection of the globalized world on urbanization. In the neighbourhood, which is the home of, mostly, large, broken and nuclear families, there are no social, cultural or sports activities available. Communication inside families is weak. The study results demonstrate the negative impact of such experiences of families as migration, crime, violence, poverty, etc., and their cultural capital on students' schooling experience. Educational achievements of students follow a downward trend, which is maintained every year. In the neighbourhood with only a few university students, there are no individuals who have received such quality education as to enable them to serve as examples, high school education generally relies on vocational or open high schools. These experiences have a wearing-out effect on parents, who are already grappling with financial impossibilities. Teachers working at schools in a cosmopolitan neighbourhood that fits the definition of a ghetto consider their schools to be less than other schools with better facilities and materials.
