Abstract (EN)
As a result of urbanization and increasing urban development pressure after the industrial revolution of the 19th century, the urban fabric has changed, and archaeological sites have remained under threat. New conservation approaches have been developed to prevent this. One of them, the integrated conservation approach, is based on the idea that conservation can be successful not only by focusing on archaeological heritage but also when considered together with its environment. This study aims to propose a model that will integrate these areas with the city by revealing the necessary parameters for the protection and improvement of the archaeological sites in the city periphery. As a result of the literature research and the examination of similar studies, the necessary interventions for realizing urban integration are discussed in terms of spatial, environmental, social, and management dimensions. The Justinian Bridge Conservation Area in Sakarya was determined as a sample study area. The architectural and historical features of the archaeological site and its relationship with its surroundings were examined, SWOT analysis has been done and a survey has taken to measure the awareness of the local population about the protected area. In line with the research made in the area and the determining factors, the method was developed, and suggestions were presented to ensure the integration of the Justinian Bridge Conservation Area into the city. As a result, it has been revealed that the archaeological sites in the city periphery should be better conserved and integrated into the city to be a part of the city. It is expected that the factors and research findings resulting from the study will contribute to the studies to be done on the conservation of archaeological sites in the city periphery and the integration of the archaeological sites into the city.
