The place of archive sources in scientific research and archival literacy (Çankırı Karatekin University case)

Various skills are needed in order to use these archive resources that compose the cultural memories of nations. All of the skills of knowing, accessing, using, evaluating and sharing of archive resources are called archive literacy. The study was prepared in order to determine the current situation of Çankırı Karatekin University(ÇAKU) Department of History and Turkish Language and Literature(TLL) department final year students about archival literacy skills and to raise awareness. These two departments were preferred because it is thought that the students of the History and TLL department use archive resources more than other departments and will use them throughout their professional lives. In line with the purpose of the study, a survey was applied to 104 students of History and 93 the Department of TLL students studying at ÇAKU.The responses of the participants to the survey were analyzed and evaluated in the SPSS statistical program. As a result of the evaluations, it has been concluded that the students of the History and TLL department have insufficient archival literacy skills to use archival resources. It is recommended that archival literacy skills, which include knowledge and skills for the use of archival resources, be integrated into the course content within the scope of a training program or taught as a course in departments. It is also recommended to determine archival literacy skills and standards by the librarianship and archival societies.
