Anatomical and morphometric features of profunda brachii artery

When the literature is examined, studies that evaluate the profunda brachii artery are limited. Majority of these studies investigate the origin of the artery. This study aimed to investigate the morphology and morphometry of the profunda brachii artery. Forty four upper extremities belonging to 24 cadavers. A single and double profunda brachii artery were observed in 39 and 5 cases. In cases with a single profunda brachii arteries, the origin was the brachial artery in 35 cases and the posterior circumflex humeral artery in 4 cases. In cases with double profunda brachii arteries, the origins for arteries were the brachial artery. In cases with a single artery, the artery passed superolateral (Type A), inferomedial (Type B) to the radial nerve at the entrance of the radial groove, was seen as Type A in 4 extremities with place of origin variation. In cases with double arteries, the proximal origin of the superolateral artery had a Type A and the distal origin of the inferomedial artery had a Type B in relation to the radial nerve. In our study, morphometric measurements were made in profunda brachii arteries in 40 extremities. Morphometric measurements of single and double arteries originating from the first branch or second branch brachialis artery were evaluated separately and compared according to gender and side. Our study in which the profunda brachii artery was examined morphologically and morphometrically, will contribute to the literature anatomically and radiologically in the treatment of humerus fractures and lateral arm flap applications by surgeons.
