Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to determine the opinions, expectations, and suggestions of learners at different proficiency levels who are learning Russian through Augmented Reality (AR)-supported remote Russian language learning, either face-to-face or online. Therefore, a qualitative research design utilizing phenomenology as the research model was employed. Data were collected through focus group interviews. Learners who would contribute to the study were recruited through a volunteer sampling method via a website (https://www.mycourset.com) created for the project, where they were informed and registered. In order to enable learners to evaluate Russian lessons using AR-supported activities in comparison to traditional methods, a convenience sampling technique was used to select participants. Nine learners were chosen since the focus group interview method was utilized. The lesson materials were designed by the researcher by calculating algorithms on the Metaverse platform. After successful results were obtained through pilot implementation in private lessons, the actual lessons were conducted with nine learners between December 1, 2022, and January 5, 2023. In addition to other materials used in the lessons, AR activities designed by the researcher were integrated into the lessons through the Metaverse mobile application. Within a one-month period, 12 lessons were implemented, and after these lessons, focus group interviews were conducted in two separate sessions on January 15, 2023. Moreover, the research advisor participated as an audience in the sessions where the focus group interviews were conducted by the researcher. According to the findings analyzed through content analysis, it was concluded that the use of AR in remote Russian language learning is beneficial as it facilitates the learning process, enables reinforcement, enhances learning motivation, ensures concentration, encourages students, enriches lesson materials, and makes them engage. However, some technological and design issues were identified as well. Along with positive and negative opinions, there is a prediction that AR will play an active role in Russian language learning and the learning of other languages. In line with the recommendations regarding the Metaverse mobile application and AR technology, the development of AR applications and the creation of new lesson materials will be beneficial for the field.
