Abstract (EN)

Evaluation of Serum Periostin, Tenascin-C, Neopterin, YKL -40 and Indolamine 2,3-Dioxygenase Levels in Asbestos Related Malignant Mesothelioma Aim: Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is an aggressive and fatal tumor that originates from mesothelial cells on the serosal surfaces of the peritoneal, pericardial, tunica vaginalis testis, most commonly pleura. Approximately 80% of patients with MM have a history of asbestos contact. Early diagnosis of cancer is very important. Therefore, biomarker detection, which may be a tumor marker, is very important in the early diagnosis of MM. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the levels of serum, Periostin, Tenascin-C (TN-C), Neopterin (NT), YKL-40 and Indolamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) in MM patients and the relationship between the effect of the levels of this biomarker on diagnosis and prognosis and age, sex, asbestos contact and histopathologic type. Material and method: This prospective study was conducted with the approval of Ethics Committee 2018/145 obtained from Inonu University and with the support of TDK - 2019 - 1512 BAP project. The participants of the study were 30 patients and 25 control groups who applied to Dicle University Faculty of Medicine, Thoracic Diseases Department with a pre-diagnosis of pleural effusion between November 2018 and April 2019. Results: Periostin, TN-C, YKL-40, Neopterin and IDO levels of the patient group were statistically significantly higher than the control group (p˂0.05). Conclusion: In our study, an increase in biomarker levels was observed with asbestos-contacted MM cases. Based on these results, we can argue that tumor markers will find very useful uses in screening MM cases and determining their prognosis in risky groups with asbestos contact. In order to obtain better results in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of MM, studies in larger populations are needed.
