Abstract (EN)

Introduction and aim: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease usually characterized by chronic airway inflammation. It is characterized by wheezing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, cough and variable expiratory airway obstruction. Although symptoms are episodic, airway inflammation in asthma is continuous. Previous studies in patients with asthma have been studied in many inflammatory markers and cytokines. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is one of the markers of platelet activation. Especially in recent years MPV was found highest in patients of cardiovascular disease characterized by thrombosis and malignant disease. In addition to these studies in many chronic inflammatory diseases, it has been shown as an important role as an indicator of disease activity, inflammation and the efficacy of anti-inflammatory therapy. In inflammatory diseases, it is stated that the size of platelets affected depending on the severity of systemic inflammation. In this study; we aimed to investigate the determination of CRP and mean platelet volume (MPV) and the relationship between disease activity with mean platelet volume during an asthma attack and stable period. Material and method: This study were included 50 patients with asthma attacks and 50 patients with stable asthma admitted to our hospital and 40 healthy individuals admitted for various reasons and undetected any pathology on examination and investigations to the outpatient Pulmonary Disease unit. Anyone having a systemic inflammatory disease, severe anemia or hematological disease , malignancy, chronic liver disease , heart or kidney disease , using systemic corticosteroids , anti-inflammatory or anticoagulant drugs were not included in the study. T and one way ANOVA test, non- parametric Kruskal- Wallis H and Many- White U test was used for comparison of quantitative parameters between the groups in the statistical analysis of the data. Chi-square test was used to compare categorical variables. Bivariate Pearson's test was used for correlation tests. In all tests the statistical significance of p <0.05 was accepted. Results: Although we find lower MPV values in asthma attacks patients ( 9.2 ± 0.9 fL) compared with stable asthma patients (9.6 ± 1.3 fL); we did not detect any statistically difference in the MPV values among patients of asthma attacks, stable asthma and control groups (p=0.374). The count and percentage of leukocyte and neutrophil and CRP values were significantly higher in patients of asthma attacks compared to the patients with stable asthma and control group (p = 0.000). There was no difference in the count and percentage of leukocyte and neutrophil and CRP values among patients with stable asthma and healthy controls (p>0.05). Conclusion: As a result, there was no statistically significant correlation between MPV values with dis ease activity in asthma patients. Because of the small number of patients and controls in our study, we believe that there is need for prospective studies including higher number of patients for determining the location of MPV in patients with asthma.
