The population policy of Turkey in Atatürk era

This thesis includes the decreasing of Turkish population which was one of the mostimportant questions that Republic of Turkey faced after the Turkish Liberation Warsucceeded under Mustafa Kemal?s leadership and the population policy consists ofmeasurement taken to prevent the population from decreasing.The population policy implemented by the government about the diminishing ofTurkish population has two main branches. We can classify that its first branch seeks toincrease birth rates, decrease death rates and encourage immigration from out of the country.The policy of increasing births includes two main fields which is prohibitive and incentive.The main goal in decreasing death rates is to make health conditions and social life better. Thestruggle with epidemic deceases is also another noteworthy field. When it comes to bringingcitizens from out of the country, the main effort is to help them to get used to their new lifeand settle. Contestation in increasing population, government incase necessity made legalregulations, established new institutions and made people conscious of the situation.The second branch of the population policy is to determine quality and quantity of thepopulation. The establishment of State Statistic Institution in 1926 and census 1927 and 1935are important developments examining the population both quality and quantity.This thesis, in between 1923-38, aims at examining the population policy with allaspects we draw attention above and consist of three main chapters.
