Valency in Atebetü'l-Hakayık

This study examines the valencies of verbs in Atebetü'l-Hakâyık. Valency is the term used to express the logical, semantic and syntactic gap that a word (verb, preposition, verbals, etc.) opens in a sentence. This gap is filled by the request or need of the word that is the head of the sentence, in order to complete its meaning. Valency is also used to express the case endings that a predicate needs to form a grammatically complete sentence. The study encompasses not only verbs but also verbals. Verbs can act as heads of sentences and auxiliary elements by taking verbal endings. When they take verbal endings and become auxiliary elements, they are considered as "nouns". However, even if they have become nouns, they do not lose their governing area and still require valency. Hence, verbals are also included in the study. The main purpose of the thesis is to determine the valencies of all verbs in Atebetü'l- Hakâyık. For this purpose, the valency study was carried out by taking into account all the copies of Atebetü'l-Hakâyık separately. These are Ayasofya with Arabic and Uyghur letters; Samarkand with Uyghur letters; Topkapı and Holland with Arabic letters. The determined valencies are presented with the valency representation model proposed by Helbig and Schenkel. The other purpose of the thesis is to determine whether there is any difference in the valency preferences of verbs among the copies of the selected work and if so, what are the reasons for them. In addition, it is also aimed to make a comparison between Karakhanid Turkish and Türkiye Turkish in terms of valency differences.
