Attitudes and motivation of young Turkish adolescents towards learning English

The purpose of the study is to look into the attitudes and motivation of young Turkish adolescents towards learning English, and the reasons that lie behind those attitudes and motivation. The study is seen as necessary at the present time that the foreign language and especially English is highly significant in every aspect since the students haven't been able to show expected and desired success towards learning English. The study is also highly significant to see how students' attitudes and motivation are influential at English learning process. A descriptive research study was applied to young Turkish adolescents. A total of 259 sixth and seventh grade students aged 12 – 13 from four different secondary schools in Adana took part in the study. In the study, the data were collected by carrying out an attitude questionnaire, semi - structured interview and English class activity evaluation form. All these data collecting methods were applied to students and analyzed by using SPSS 24.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). Descriptive analysis was conducted, frequencies and percentages were evaluated. The results of the study disclosed to what extent the attitudes and motivation of young Turkish adolescents towards learning English have an impact on learning English in practice.
