Abstract (EN)
Jean-Luc Godard has been a director looking for constant innovation throughout his career. This search for innovation has provided his cinema to be multidimensional and constantly changing. Nevertheless, the constant change of his cinema and the long process scope make it difficult to study his cinema career as a whole. This study aims to divide Godard cinema into periods using the auteur theory and to reveal the innovative search of cinema in the frame of the determined periods. The separation of Godard's cinema will provide both a better understanding of his cinema and the change in his cinema. When Godard's films are examined chronologically, it is seen that there are break points in his cinema and changes in the understanding of cinema in a certain period of time. These sharp break points make it possible for Godard's cinema to divide and examine fourty-eight different films as periods of New Wave, Political, Video and New Cinema, which he has made throughout his career in cinema. In Godard's New Wave Period, form, image and individual; in the period of Political Cinema discourse, voice and class; in the Video Film Period, tools, writing and family; and finally in the New Cinema Period, the message, music and society are at the forefront. Although Godard has different understandings in these four different periods, he made films at different times and works with different crew and actors-actresses, he has always been consistent in style and content in each period itself and in all periods. In addition to his understanding of cinema, Godard is always a pioneer director in terms of technology. He uses the latest technology in all of his periods and seeks to integrate technological developments into the art of cinema. Godard has a cinematic understanding of critical, quizzical and philosophical debates on concepts such as language, politics, love and death by set aside the elements such as story, plot line and character in all four periods.
