Abstract (EN)

Since the 19th century, modern states have commenced to implement policies aiming for militarization of the youth in order to prepare them for the warfare in parallel with the dissemination of compulsory military service and total warfare. This particular study analyses the similar policies implemented since the first years of the newly established Republic. Influenced by the state of mind and practices between the two world wars, the first policy acquiring a shape during the period the Turkish Republic was established and began to consolidate was formation of paramilitary youth organisations whereas the other policy was offering military based courses in civil(ian) schools. The Preparation for Military Service lessons added to curriculum for the male students in middle school and high school in 1926 and for the female students in 1937 were analysed within the scope of militarization of the youth in this study which aims to discuss the Republic's perception of the youth, intended militarist policies and discourse towards the youth through the textbooks of the significant period of time.
