Comparing the results of the patch test readings with the european baseline series on the second day, third day, fifth day and seventh day

Objective: Patch test is the gold standard for the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis. There is still no consensus about optimal reading time. We aimed to determine the optimal reading time comparing the results of the patch test readings on the second day, third day, fifth day and seventh day.Materials and methods: 100 patients (39 male, 61 female) with suspicion of allergic contact dermatitis were patch tested with European Baseline Series.Findings: Among the patients participating the study, 38 positive patch test reactions were observed on the second day and on the third day, 35 positive reactions were observed on the fifth day, and 29 positive reactions were observed on the seventh day. Sensitivity and pecificity were 84.6% and 99.8% on the second day; 97, 4% and 100% on the third day; 89.7% and 100% on the fifth day and 74, 4% and 100% on the seventh day, respectively.Conclusion: In order to reach to optimal time for patch test reading, for only one reading time, third day is best; but if two readings will be done then third day and fifth day are preferable.Keywords: Allergic contact dermatitis, patch test, days of reading.
