Designing materials for developing reading skills in teaching Turkish as a foreign language in the context of European language portfolio

From the point of contributions of language skills to learning-teaching process in foreign language teaching and being a language teaching project of Council of Europe, the impact of European Language Portfolio implementations on language learning and teaching are the basis for this study.The aim of this study is designing reading skills materials that develops learners? reading skills in the context of European Language Portfolio. With this aim, firstly the description of European Language Portfolio which provides restructuring of foreign language teaching programmes and Common European Framework of Reference for Languages comprising this document therotical backround and how to define the reading factors in those documents were tried to be described.On the back of therotical backround, New Hitit Course book that has been claimed to be prepared according to European Language Portfolio was evaluated in the content of reading skills. At this evaluating process reading texts and reading activities are analysed according to ELP and CEFR that they overlap with those descriptions or not. In the context of the evaluating list of reading texts and activities which is formed reading selections of the coursebook are tried to be analysed.After the evaluation of reading texts and activities in the course book, it has been concluded that reading materials in those books are not sufficent for reading strategies and reading skills improvement. It has also been concluded that authentic texts are rarely used in those books. In the context of these findings, reading materials are designed according to ELP and CEFR reading definitions. Finally, some examples of reading materials are presented which are suitable for ELP and CEFR language levels.
