International retirement migration in Europe and Turkey as a new destination: Evidence from Muğla-Dalyan

International retirement migration is an important example of the new international migration types. It has been extensively studied since 1990s. International retirement migration is also an important phenomenon for Turkey where this type of migration and its effects can be observed at the southern and western coasts growingly.In this context, the main aim of this thesis is to describe importance of Turkey as a new destination in international retirement migration and to determine basic reasons of Turkey?s popularity in this migration flows after 1990s while presenting development and comperative analysis of retirement migration in Europe.In the scope of this aim, existing literature on international retirement migration in Europe and America was examined and a field study was conducted, using questionnaries and carrying out in-depth interviews, on European retirees settled in the in Dalyan, town of Muğla province.As a result, this thesis presented Turkey?s relative advantages and disadvantages in international retirement migration in Europe and determined the basic motivations for its increasing popularity. Field study revealed that European retired migrants had some problems and a big part of these problems were related to the acquisition of real estate and relations with the local government.Key Words: International Retirement Migration (IRM), migration, retirement, Turkey, Dalyan, Europe
