Investigation of the relationship between spiritual well-being and psychological endurance level in cancer patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy

This study was conducted to examine the relationship between the spiritual well-being and psychological resilience level of cancer patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy. This study is a correlational-descriptive study and the population of the study consists of all patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy treatment in the Haseki Training and Research Hospital chemotherapy unit. The sample of the study consisted of 293 patients who received chemotherapy treatment in the Haseki Training and Research Hospital chemotherapy unit between September 2019 and December 2020. Three forms, namely the Patient Information Form, the Spiritual Well-being Scale (FACIT-SP 12) and the Adult Psychological Resilience Scale (YIPRS) were used to collect the data. R version 2.15.3 program was used for statistical analysis. In the analysis of data, Shapiro-Wilk test, Independent groups t test, One-way analysis of variance, Bonferroni test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Dunn-Bonferroni test, Pearson correlation analysis, Spearman correlation analysis, Cronbach alpha coefficient, GLM ( General Linear Model) and linear regression analysis were used. Statistical significance was accepted as p <0.05. According to the research findings, the average age of the patients is (58.28 ± 13.85). 57.3% (n = 168) of the patients were female, 32.1% (n = 94) were diagnosed with hematological cancer, 33.8% (n = 99) were stage 4, 65.2% (n = 191) was found to have metastasis. Spiritual Well-being Scale and Psychological Resilience Scale scores of the patients included in the study, and the time of diagnosis, marital status, employment status, number of children, caregiver, cancer type and stage, metastasis status, number of cures and presence of additional chronic diseases It was determined that there is a statistically significant difference. The mean total score of PRSFA for cancer patients who received outpatient chemotherapy was 107.45 ± 32.01, and the mean total score for FACIT-SP 12 was 28.56 ± 12.08. When the relationship between FACIT-SP 12 and PRSFA was examined, it was found that there was a positive significant relationship between total scale scores (p <0.05). In our study, it was found that the psychological resilience level of the patients was above the middle level, and their spiritual well-being was moderate. It has been determined that there is a positive significant relationship between psychological resilience and spiritual well-being. Nurses should integrate these two variables, which are important in providing holistic care, into their clinical care. Keywords: Cancer, spirituality, spiritual well-being, resilience
